High Commander Lesto Arseni is the most feared man in the Harken Empire. None but the High King dares risk his wrath—and a pirate who once punched him in the middle of the imperial pavilion. A pirate who later snuck away with Lesto to an empty room, touched him in ways far more memorable. And then immediately bolted like a man who'd gotten what he wanted.

Shemal just wants to live a normal life, leave his pirating days behind him and prove that he's respectable now. The last thing he needs is the two idiots who show up wanting his help with the noble they've kidnapped—the very man Shemal had been hoping to prove himself to, the man he hasn't forgotten since Shemal punched him a year and a half ago.

The Pirate of Fathoms Deep Tales of the High Court Book 2 edition by Megan Derr Romance eBooks

The Pirate of Fathoms Deep is Lesto and Shemal's story. Lesto is the right hand of the high king -- Advisor, military commander, and brother-in-law. I was surprised to read Lesto's physical form: He wasn't this muscle bound warrior but instead a slim supple man with a core of strength. The muscle bound hunk in this story is Shemal, he of the thick thighs and even thicker long hair with a love of earrings. Because pirates love jewels and earrings of course!

Lesto and Shemal met in the first book but it was barely touched on. As I had read these two books back to back I couldn't pinpoint that meeting. Both men walked away from each other, hurt, and in an odd twist of fate they meet up again, air their differences, and start all over. Thank goodness they were on the same page otherwise they wouldn't have survived. Once again bodies falling left and right.

While this was a nice continuation in the series, it didn't match the first. Lesto spent very little time with Shemal and in true man fashion never said much. It was no wonder things fell apart and of course Shemal's confidence flagged. And that's a little hard to believe since Shemal is in his 40's. He should be mature enough that when someone like Lesto focuses on him, it's solid. But no, men can be difficult to figure out and Lesto has been self contained and focused for years, has an image, and for whatever reason . . . His heart was lined up but his words didn't get across. Again, typical men.

While the epilogue was nice, it would've been even better to see Shemal overcoming his past to be Lesto's equal in every way. There was a huge jump from barely able to form his childish scrawl in a note to reading a book. As this was Shemal's story, I wanted to see his progress. I wondered how life outside the palace worked for this couple and not just how they'd be as parents. There had to be a big transition yet it's barely touched on.

I also wondered about the king's first husband able to have kids and the two other brothers don't or can't. I didn't get that. It was never said if a surrogate was used or if it was the king's consort that bore the king's heirs. I was leaning towards mpreg in that first book but again nothing was written about this being a common or rare. I was left guessing and that did affect how I viewed this story and this pair, especially when they kept mentioning children. If it was such a big thing for Lesto, how come a deep discussion didn't happen until the epilogue? I felt short changed. - Dan's Wife

EDIT: Asked on a mm forum and the answer was that the first husband was transgender and did bear the king's children.

The Pirate of Fathoms Deep Tales of the High Court Book 2 edition by Megan Derr Romance eBooks Reviews

How can you not love pirates? Shemal is the sweetest pirate I have ever read about, and he doesn’t even want to be a pirate anymore. While I usually prefer a slow burn, I actually liked the way Lesto and Shemal met and, uh, got together. Their banter was amusing, and I enjoyed seeing how their relationship blossomed. Lesto is a hard-assed soldier, but he has a big heart (much like Sarrica). I found the story engaging, and I love Megan Derr, so her name alone drew me to this series. If you read the High King’s Golden Tongue, definitely read Pirate of Fathoms Deep. You will not be disappointed.
After reading "The High King's Golden Tongue' of course I had to read its sequel, while this one's story progression doesn't play out quite as smoothly as its predecessor it honestly works because the characters are so strange and uneven themselves that the tale probably wouldn't have worked out any other way!

I hope that someday Megan Derr sees fit to give us the story of the twins and Sarrica's kids wreaking havoc upon the empire since considering their parents its surely their destiny, although I wonder if Bellan and Nyla won't wind up with another sibling or two in the future given that Allen apparently seems to get along wonderfully with children... who knows what could happen but I will say that I for one am in a state of pure anguish waiting for the next book to see how Jadar's story will play out and continue to add to this enthralling world!
I really LOVE THIS SERIES.... I can never say this enough. You really need to start with book one and read the hole series from start to current and I cant wait for book 4. In this one Lesto get his pirate. And Shemal is o e of my absolute favorite characters.. your just going to fall in love with these too and wish the book would never end. This is DEFINITELY A MUST READ. Out of the hole series this is my favorite book so far. And I love how true Lesto is the the family moto " the only way to stop an Arseni is to bury them fathoms deep." I just Love that.
Also I just Love how Shemal and all the Islanders talk really. "My mother insists I've wasted most of it. But the ocean has patterns that no one Els can see, and everything washes ashore precisely where she intends."
This book really is a MUST READ....
Eh. For context, I LOVED the heck out of The High King's Golden Tongue, and I generally like Durr's work as a whole, so I was very excited to read the Pirate of Fathoms Deep, and splurged on purchasing it because of this. And it was quite disappointing. I didn't think the characters were very complex--which they often aren't in Durr's work and that's usually not a big deal; she trades in fairy tales, after all--which is a problem when the plot is so basic, goes so slowly, and keeps recycling the exact same conflict over and over. This was a poor follow up to Golden Tongue; I don't know if she had to write it very quickly or something, but although it's not bad, it's also not good.
