Like the film, ‘Julie/Julia’ this book is a true story based on the lives of two women who lived at different times and places but who had uniquely intertwined lives. Elizabeth Spring, astrologer and aspiring writer, finds Annie Besant because of unusual similarities in their astrology charts. Annie is a woman who's been lost in history--a woman who was a passionate social reformer and who was declared 'an unfit mother' and lost custody of her children because of distributing information on birth control in 1875. After trials and depression, Annie becomes a passionate spiritual seeker; being mentored by the Russian psychic Madame Blavatsky, head of the Theosophical Society. As Elizabeth struggles to write a screenplay of Annie’s life she discovers the heartfelt and obsessive story of Annie’s adopted son, the young mystic J. Krishnamurti, and the occultist, Charles Leadbeater. Elizabeth questions the role of fate and reincarnation in her own life by what she uncovers about her mysterious relationship with Annie who was born exactly 100 years earlier, in Victorian England in 1847.

I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in KM, Annie Besant, The Theosophist Society, or Ojai. The author uses her knowledge of astrology to leap into the fascinating story Annie Besant and the Theosophist's discovery and annointing of Krishnamurti as the Messiah. But what distinguishes this book is Spring's focus on Besant, a remarkable woman from the Victorian era who, like many women in history, was eclipsed by male counterparts (Ghandi, in this instance). I rate this book 5 stars due to the author's originality, her skills in relating tricky and nuanced events and themes in the lives of the principals, as well as her overall generosity of spirit in the telling.Product details

Sweet Synchronicity Finding Annie Besant Discovering Krishnamurti Elizabeth Spring 9780692326268 Books Reviews
I was impressed that the author decided to leave her job, home and friends to move 3000 miles in order to "Answer her Calling" and write this book. It was "no ordinary calling" --but I won't give the story away. Just as Annie had to reinvent herself many times, the author too, had to reinvent herself in order to write this-- although clearly not new to the craft of writing, the author's life story was as challenging and mysterious as the people she wrote about--her obstacles were real and contemporary-- the obstacles of her characters were larger than life...and all of it true. Although it reads like a novel, the "synchronicities" in the stories of these people who answered their "Calling" leaves the reader with a feeling of awe and inspiration.
This book brings to life Annie Besant's many trials and triumphs. It's a great read, both for the hugeness of Besant's life and the embracing tone created by the author. Interestingly, the author feels a distinct kinship with Besant, a connection that grew as research for the book was being done. Indeed, a trove of coincidences between their lives became apparent.
Annie Besant was that rare person who did not look the other way when confronted with injustice and ignorance. Her activism for the poor and against the mistreatment of women makes her life notable, heartbreaking, and inspiring.
Events do not slow down for Besant as she matures and as her interests expand. She goes from a marriage to a domineering minister to familiarity with the world of theosophy. There are fascinating portraits of Madame Blavatsky and Krishnamurti, and others.
There are several themes at play in the book
An appreciative study of a remarkable, courageous woman.
The confluence of many elements, some enlightening, some alarming, within the world of theosophy.
The experience of synchronicity, or, as it may alternately be known, coincidences.
Synchronicity, I think it is fair to say, provided the impetus for writing the book. It is an aspect of life that is worth knowing about. I found this book a most enjoyable way of learning about it.
It's a great adventure, over years connecting people thru their paths in life
In Sweet Synchronicities, Elizabeth Spring writes a fascinating account of Annie Besant's laudable and under celebrated life, while weaving chapters of her own stories through those of Besant's, thus creating an intriguing mix of memoir and biography - no small task. As a Jungian analyst and a writer of memoir myself, I am touched by the way Elizabeth explores her experiences as she questions what is symbolic and what is real. A heartfelt rendering of the lives of two women from different eras, both of them searching for their truth.
I loved this book. For so many reasons! The synchronicity of Elizabeth and Annie. I have no doubt that they are intertwined in so many ways. I had a hard time putting it down. Readng n 2 sittings! Annie did so much with her precious life. It gives one pause to think how much can really be accomplished in the span of a lifetime !
Excellent read.
I was fortunate enough to attend a partial reading of this fascinating story by the author and found myself wanting to continue and hear more, thus the immediate purchase of the book. An artful and skillfully written historical chronicle, it amuses and intrigues drawing the participant into Annie's eventful journey of discovery.
Elizabeth Spring is both a gifted writer and dedicated researcher and has penned a story that holds the reader's attention until the very end.
